THE CORKSCREW CANYON

az egyesült államokban, arizona és utah határán, a grand canyon északi csücskénél található page városa.

az ott elterülő navajo indián területen a század elején egy pásztorlányka különös helyet fedezett fel. a fennsík felszínén csak karvastagságú törésvonal látszik belőle, ám odalent széles barlanggá tárul a kanyon, ami nem más, mint egy kiszáradt folyómeder.

a szűk nyílás miatt csak déli 12 és 1 óra között hatol be ide a világosság. mintha élő, sugárzó test belsejében sétálna az ember. ilyenkor lehet fényképezni is. feltéve persze, hogy nem fenyeget a gyorsáradás, amikor is futni kell, ki merre lát, mert az iszaptól elöntött folyosókból nincs menekvés. ottlétünk előtt egy esztendővel 11 francia turista későn látta be az indián vezető igazát.

the town of page is located at the northern end of the grand canyon, right on the border between utah and arizona.

early in the last century, a little shepherdess made a fascinating discovery on a nearby navajo property. seen from above as a narrow crack in the ground of a plateau, a dry underground river bed turns into an amazing cave.

the sunlight can only reach the place for a short interval around noon, making it look like the inside of a large living organism. this is the time to take photographs. well, unless there is a danger flash floods, in which case the only strategy is to run for it. when the mud hits, there is no escaping from the narrow cave as 11 french tourists belatedly realised only a year prior to our visit.
